Hello, and you are very welcome to this step by step guide: Affiliate Marketing for Beginners!
I’m very excited for you because today I’m going to show you in a practical 7 Step way, how you can be creative, pursue an interest and make money at the same time! Wouldn’t that be wonderful?! I will be showing you how making money does not have to be a big chore. You do not have to sacrifice most of your time doing something you don’t like just to earn a paycheck at the end of the week or month.
Affiliate marketing can save you from having to be stuck in a 9-5 job and can allow you to establish for yourself a home based business that you can be proud of and really enjoy working on.
Affiliate marketing is a great choice if you are pursuing a business online. It requires no investment, no products of your own and no qualification (although there are some basic skills you will need and should strive to develop so to be successful).
Essentially, you will be promoting products and services on behalf of a company, who in turn will pay you each time you make a sale. Your payment will be a piece of the pie, a commission, a certain percentage of the full price. Get good at selling and you will make a lot of income.
But you will want to have an action plan, a business strategy for how you are going to start selling and what market or niche you will specialise in.
Before we get into that, you should know that basic things to watch out for when considering an online career in affiliate marketing.
A Word of Warning Before you Start Affiliate Marketing
To avoid falling for scams, be prepared to do your own research on any program that claims to help you make money online, especially if it says anything along the lines of ‘No experience required,’ and ‘Earn tons in a short time.’ This is nearly always a red flag, a probable scam. These products generally fall into categories such as the following: a ‘get-rich-quick scheme,’ MLM (multi-level marketing) or a pyramid scheme.
Affiliate marketing, like many other things online, is good and legal in itself but it is unfortunately abused by many scammers out there, so while you don’t want to stay clear of it, but use it for good, at the same time, you want to be on the look out for dubious and low quality products, and finally, just as you dislike spam and scammers, then make sure you yourself don’t go down the route of spamming and scamming others.
Personally, I went through so many bad programs and wasted so much money before I finally found the right program for me.
Oh right! With that said, let’s dive right into our action plan – the strategy and steps you will want to take to get started correctly in this industry.
Step 1. Find your Segment of the Market
Highly important step here to start off with. Find your niche. Ask yourself what you would be most comfortable talking about and explaining to other people.
I should definitely be a real interest you have rather than something that you think will make money. This is very important because you will do far better in a niche that you are comfortable with and have some knowledge and passion for. You will thrive in this and you are at least ten times more likely to persevere with it long term. Besides, any niche can make you a full time income online because of the sheer number of affiliate products out there as well as the amount of people who are using the internet – we’re talking billions.
People talk about the three big niches of health, wealth and relationships and how you can then narrow these down into an indefinite number of sub-niches. But just focus on something you feel at home with. A hobby for instance, such as camping, travel, cooking or drones. Or maybe it’s pets, dog care and dog products, or gadgets, toys and health products for cats, etc.
This is where you’ll start with your future online affiliate marketing business. The next step will be all about how to lay the foundations for this business and start giving it some structure.
Step 2. Creating a Website in Under 30 Seconds
By far the best way to lay a solid foundation for an online business in affiliate marketing is to establish your presence with your own website.
This will ensure that what you have to share and offer to your target audience is up there on the internet for all to see and can be found by the content you will be creating relative to your chosen niche.
A website has huge potential for expansion, for rankings in search engines, for organic traffic and ultimately for an ever-increasing flow of passive income.
If you learn to do it correctly, a blog that makes use of affiliate marketing will bring you the fulfillment and success you are looking for.
If you want to get started right now and lay that perfect foundation for your online business, you can. Here is how you can get started today and have your own website created in under 30 seconds.

Step 3. Grow your Site and Attract Visitors
Let’s say you have your niche now, you have your website, you have tools, training, coaching, a limited use of Jaaxy for keyword research, and website security and speed, …all for free. Now, your next step will be to start putting content on your site with the help of your keyword research tool which for now will be Jaaxy, the tool used at Wealthy Affiliate.
To learn more about Jaaxy and to try a search for yourself, see the article below:
This part is fun as well as exciting, though it will require dedication. You are going to be blogging about your interest, your niche. Gradually, your site will become indexed, ranked and more and more visible online.
There are affiliates out there who depend on paying for traffic to their landing pages and offers etc. But you will be doing it the authentic, free and most rewarding way.
You will be doing something you love, sharing an interest, helping people with their needs and problems with your information, reviews, products and services. You will be talking from research, experience and passion and you will discover that an online business is enjoyable, fun and fulfilling.
Step 4. Making your First Sales Online
If you have been a real helper of other people and been able to explain accurately and recommend persuasively, but without undue pressure, the products within your chosen niche, you will begin to make your first sales online!
But you must never allow yourself to become lazy. A website has massive potential, no set limit; you get out of it what you put in.
So whilst you should continue to add to your site, improving it, adding content, and keeping it connected with social media platforms, you should also be able to branch out into other things, such as YouTube, Paid Ads and Email Marketing, all while maintaining your website as the base, core and brand of your business.
Further down the road, you can also select relevant articles from your blog, edit them and produce an eBook which you will then be able to sell online. There is an article below that will show you how to do this.
Step 5. Combine your Website with YouTube
A great way to branch out with your online affiliate marketing business is by adding a YouTube channel to run alongside with your website in the same related niche.
In fact, a good way to do this is to create video content based on the same content of each of your blog articles.
In this way you can further promote your website by linking to it from YouTube and vice versa. This is known as a backlink and helps you with rankings on search engines.
It is also possible and advisable to embed/attach your YouTube videos within your articles, making sure that both article and video are on the same particular topic.
Some Basic YouTube Tips and Hacks.
- If you do not want to show your face on YouTube it’s very possible to create videos with text and visuals.
- You can also have some audio in the background by downloading free tracks from the YouTube Audio Library.
- For your YouTube Thumbnails, Canva will meet your needs just fine.
- To help grow your channel you can use keyword tools such as VidIQ and TubeBuddy.
- Avoid going to websites and paying for views and subscribers. Do Not fall for this; most of these are either bot/fake views and subs or people who are paid to click on your videos. But they are not genuine, loyal or useful people to have on an affiliate marketing YouTube channel, or any channel really for that matter. No website or channel wants bot traffic. Such scam sites include Fiverr and PromoSM, but there are many, many others out there. You want genuine, interested people, not bots and hired people who don’t care about your channel. (Note: Fiverr is good for other things however).
- If you really want to pay your way and get a boost for your channel, you can use YouTube Advertising to promote your channel. You could do this if after some time you are still really struggling to get it off the gourd. But a channel should be able to grow naturally and gradually gain traction. (The images below display the analytics of a video that has been boosted using the YouTube Advertising platform.)
Step 6. Use PPC Campaigns
If your site is going well and preferably if it is already generating revenue, but either way, if you have a budget for it, you will probably want to make use of an affordable Ads platform such as Microsoft Advertising to help your business along.
Ideally, running ads should never be something your business literally depends on to keep generating revenue, even though there are people who have mastered the art of this, so that they could just keep depending on ads, but most successful people who run ads usually have other income streams on the side as well, some of which involve organic traffic sources and others paid.
Some Tips on Running PPC Campaigns.
- Microsoft Ads (also known as Bing Ads) are more affordable than Google Ads so they are a good place to start.
- Facebook Ads can be very frustrating if you have not run ads in general before. Facebook frequently banns people’s ad accounts for policy violations. But many people find it hard to gather and retain all the information regarding rules of how to do Fb ads correctly, and consequently they are penalised by Facebook.
- Finding a course on Udemy for example (I followed a course by KC Tan for only $19) is a good way to inform yourself before you start running ads. Alternatively, if you become a Wealthy Affiliate Premium member, you will receive access to an entire module and multiple classes from experienced members on running PPC campaigns.
- Always remember not to think of running ads like using gambling machine. Improve your knowledge regularly and when experimenting with ads, spend only a little at the start until you become more experienced.
- Run parallel campaigns with slight differences/modifications to test which one performs better. Then keep the winner and improve on it if possible, such as by setting up another similar campaign. In this way, you will narrow down what really works – what gets not only clicks of course, but conversions.
Step 7. Gradually Build an Email List
This not something you need to worry much about when you are starting out as an affiliate marketer. But as you progress or at any time you like really, it certainly won’t hurt your business for you to implement a strategy that allows you to follow up with either your customers or potential buyers who come to your website.
Personally, I have never been too eager to run email marketing campaigns since I myself have been annoyed by a sense of being spammed. However, if someone does want to leave your email list, they are always free to unsubscribe. And email marketing is a large part of the digital marketing world. The popular saying goes, ‘The Money is in the List!’
It also helps to be aware that if you are quite new to marketing, there is no need to be in a hurry if you are going to build an email list. You can do it gradually and experiment in the meantime with how it all works.
Not every blogger actually wants pop-ups on their website that prompt people to give their email. But if you are someone like this but still want to do some form of email marketing then, alternatively, you can run an email marketing side-hustle entirely aside from your website. My article below will show exactly how to do this. It will also include information about an autoresponder and particular traffic source.
